Is it advisable to take Coffee during Pregnancy?

When a woman becomes pregnant her entire way of life gets changed from the way of sitting to her eating habits. If you are a coffee lover and can’t skip your morning coffee, then you have to think twice before you start enjoying your cup of coffee as coffee contains caffeine which has to be limited during the pregnancy. During pregnancy, you tend to get lots of advice from everyone around you like what is good for the healthy development of the baby, what can be harmful things during the pregnancy that should be avoided and many other things. You cannot possibly follow all of the advice that you hear, so here we will be discussing the coffee; the very first thing by which you start your day. You may have heard from many people that coffee is harmful and should be avoided during pregnancy but, then the next question that you need to ask is that how much coffee is permissible during the pregnancy? The answer is undoubted yes. Pregnant women can take coffee but to a certain extent depending upon the type of coffee and the caffeine content in your coffee. You cannot just grab a cup of coffee whenever you feel like during pregnancy period.  

Concerns about the consumption of coffee during pregnancy

The point of concern here is that what can be the side effects that caffeine can have on your body. Some studies have found that consumption of excess caffeine can increase the chances of a miscarriage of foetus. However, no defined link can be made between the probability of the miscarriage and the consumption of the coffee during pregnancy. Sometimes caffeine intake is also associated with the stillbirth of the baby. Apart from this, drinking lot of coffee during pregnancy will also not make you feel good, as it raises the heart rate as caffeine acts as a stimulant.

Coffee can also lead to insomnia and heartburn as caffeine stimulates the production of acid in the stomach. Since the caffeine keeps flowing in the blood, it can cross the placenta and reach the baby. Another reason to avoid coffee during pregnancy is that it contains phenols which make it difficult for the body to absorb iron from the food that you eat. Thus, while you are pregnant and the require lot of iron, drinking coffee frequently is not advised.

Enjoying your coffee during pregnancy

Now, it is clear that even during pregnancy you can still enjoy your favourite cup of coffee but in a limited quantity. You can also consume the decaffeinated coffee as it has a limited amount of caffeine. You may not like the decaffeinated coffee instantly, thus, you can start by mixing the decaffeinated and the caffeinated coffee and gradually increase the ratio of decaffeinated coffee to the caffeinated one. Studies have found that taking more than 200mg of caffeine regularly can increase the risk of miscarriage and can affect the weight of the baby. Avoid the finely grounded coffee as it releases more caffeine in your drink. Try to avoid consuming coffee from outside also, as you cannot control the amount of caffeine content that they put in your coffee.
